Democracy is, historically speaking, something very recent.
It is first of all the belief that individual human beings are what matter most － more than the state, or the total of national wealth, or anything else whatever.
Then it is the belief in equlaity not in the sense that everybody is alike or equally gifted,
which is obiously untrue, but in the sense that everyone should have certain basic opportunities.

역사적으로 언급하자면, 민주주의란 매우 최근의 것이다.
무엇보다도 이는 개인으로서의 인간이 가장 중요하다는 믿음이다. - 국가보다, 국가의 부보다, 그리고 그 어떠한 것보다.
이때 민주주의란 평등성에 대한 믿음이다.
모든 사람이 동일하거나, 동등한 재능을 부여받았다는 점에서가 아니라, (이는 명백히 거짓이다.)
모든 이가 기본적인 기회를 가져야 한다는 점에서 말이다.
